Strength & Agility Assessment

  1. Event #1 - Ladder Climb
This event seeks to determine if the applicant suffers from acrophobia (fear of heights) while working from a ladder at a considerable height.

  2. Event #2 - Ladder Reach
This event seeks to determine if the applicant has the combination of height and upper body strength necessary to remove a ground ladder from a fire apparatus without assistance.

  3. Event #3 - Body Drag
This event seeks to determine if the applicant has the combination of strength, ability to work under stressful conditions, and suffer from claustrophobia (fear of being enclosed). The ability to rescue unconscious victims from burning or smoked filled buildings using self-contained breathing apparatus is essential for satisfactory performance as a Firefighter

  4. Event #4 - Confined Space Tube

  5. Event #5 - Stair Climb
This event seeks to determine if the applicant has the necessary upper and lower body strength to carry hose or other pieces of equipment where needed at an emergency incident or training exercise.

  6. Event #6 - Hose Couple
This event seeks to determine if the applicant possesses the manual dexterity necessary to couple and uncouple hose in an efficient manner. This is an activity that firefighters frequently perform working at emergency scenes and during training exercises.

  7. Event #7 - Hose Drag
This event seeks to determine if the applicant has the necessary strength to maneuver a charged hose line. This activity is frequently necessary to properly position hose at emergency incidents and during training exercises.

  8. Event #8 - Agility Course
This event seeks to determine if the applicant has the necessary combination of cardiovascular fitness, balance, strength and agility to perform a variety of tasks under emergency or stressful conditions at a fire scene. Firefighter tasks require prolonged physical exercise and exertion while operating at emergency incidents. This event seeks to simulate those conditions.
