Join the Rocky Mount Police Department

The Rocky Mount Police Department serves a growing community with a population of approximately 58,000 in an area of about 37.5 square miles. This agency actively participates in community oriented policing philosophies. The department offers professional and rewarding careers, excellent training, benefits, including career development and promotional opportunities.

Qualified individuals without basic law enforcement certification will begin their career by attending the Rocky Mount Police Department's Police Academy for twenty weeks with training offered in areas of law, firearms, defensive tactics, community policing, departmental policies, driver training, first aid, human relations, and other law enforcement techniques. Sworn status is dependent upon completion of the academy. Starting salary for a police cadet without law enforcement certification is $36,525.12. After successful completion of basic law enforcement training and being sworn in, the salary is then increased to $38,374.22. The Rocky Mount Police Department welcomes interested individuals that already possess North Carolina basic law enforcement certification.

Benefits

The following benefits are available to employees of the City of Rocky Mount; certain benefits are specific to the Police Department.

Health and Medical Care: The City provides medical coverage for its employees through Aetna at a minimum cost.

Retirement and 401k: After one year of uninterrupted service, all Police Department Employees begin contributing six percent of their salary to the N.C. Local Government Employees Retirement System. Employees are eligible to make voluntary contributions to the State 401k plan at the maximum rate allowed under current regulations, and the 5% employer contributions begin immediately.

Sick and Annual Leave: Employees begin accumulating Annual and Sick leave on the date of hire.

Holidays: Officers are paid for 11 holidays per year in recognition of the following: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (2) and Christmas (3).

Uniforms: All uniforms and equipment are furnished by the City. This includes the Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun, 800 mhz radio, bulletproof vest, leather gear, asp, OC spray, as well as summer and winter uniforms.

Incentive Pay:

  • Language Skills:

    • Oral proficiency in a designated language: $25.00 bi weekly

    • Oral/Written proficiency in the same language: $35.00 bi weekly

    • Oral proficiency in two designated languages: $35.00 bi weekly

  • Education: (note: the pay continues until you are in a position which requires the degree)

    • Associated Degree: $25.00 bi weekly

    • Bachelors Degree: $30.00 bi weekly

    • Masters Degree: $35.00 bi weekly

  • Employment:

    • Applicant moves inside the city limits: $1,000 bonus

For Veterans

The Rocky Mount Police Department's entry-level training program was approved by the NC Department of Labor as a nationally recognized Police Officer Apprenticeship Program. During the first three years of employment with the RMPD, any veteran who meets the training requirements set forth by the Police Officer Apprenticeship Program may choose to receive monthly compensation from their GI Training benefit in addition to their regular City of Rocky Mount salary.
