What Is Crime Stoppers?

During the late 1970s and early 80s a program was developed to gain voluntary information from citizens that would help to solve criminal cases. After a spectacular beginning, Crime Stoppers, Inc., became an effort spread throughout the United States. In March 1993 the Twin County Crime Stoppers Program got underway. This program is housed within the Investigation Division of the Rocky Mount Police Department and serves Rocky Mount and all cities and towns within Nash and Edgecombe County. Crime Stoppers is a program which encourages citizens to provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of criminals via cash rewards and a promise of anonymity for the caller.

How Does It Work?

Anyone who calls Crime Stoppers (252-977-1111) about a crime is given a code number. Callers don't have to give their name- just what they know. If the information given results in an arrest the caller is eligible to receive a cash reward up to $1,000.00. The amount of reward is based on the quality of the information received. Crime Stoppers takes information on all unsolved cases, solved cases, Twin Counties Top Ten Most Wanted and missing person.

How Is It Funded?

Crime Stoppers is a nonprofit organization and is funded by private donations and various fund raisers sponsored by local businesses and other organizations.

Who Does It Benefit?

Everyone in Nash and Edgecombe County benefits from the program except the criminals. Since the program began in 1993 we have received over 700 calls and made over 300 arrests. The calls have helped clear over 150 cases and thousands of dollars worth of property has been recovered and returned to the owners.
